alignment of a horizontal cylinder

Howdy, Im wondering how to properly align a cylindrical part in base alignment. Im having trouble figuring out how to get the Z axis to point in the same direction as the physical Z axis. there are 2 coolant ports on the part and id like to clock the part off one or both of them to keep my X axis parallel to the rock.

Thanks!

First thing. The feature that controls the Rotation in Space (Spatial) cannot also control the Planar Rotation.

For the 2 coolant ports, create a 3d Line and recall the 2 circles. Use this for the planar rotation.

For the 'Rotation in space,' use the most stable element possible. Cylinder1 (X-axis) could be well suited for this. For the 'Planar rotation,' as Tom already mentioned, you can use a 3D line (Y-axis) derived from the two coolant ports. You can then use the circle 'lip' or Cylinder1 as the Y and Z origins. For the X origin, use the plane 'rear.' In the first two input fields, you only limit the rotations. In fields 3 to 5, you set the X, Y, and Z origins.

I think you could somehow use parallel cylinders.
Or you can create symmetry from cylinders, then make 3d line from recalled symmetry and main cylinder. I have better resuts with 3d line, then just point/circle and setted nominal.

  • 3 weeks later...
After finishing my Basic training class I realized the root of my problem was that I did not change the rotation of my part in CAD transformation after I loaded it into the program to start an imaginary alignment before I set the actual base alignment.

All is well now, stuck on free form and curves now. Fun stuff!
Thanks for the help.
