2 Tier Probe Rack on DuraMax

Has anybody here done it?

We have Contura's and Eclipses with multiple tiers built from standard extruded pieces, works great. But now the question is doing it on a DuraMax while eating up as little Y as possible....

Anybody have any examples?

Though we do not officially support this configuration, I believe should technically work if you have some custom build of this set up.

Why stop a 2?..lol I was thinking about adding a 2 tier rack below the main rack, mounted to the table.

We have this modular stand system with a magnet that we can swap out custom vises to the CMMs, due to the size of some of the parts we need about 350mm of the Y available. Most parts we need to access both sides in a run so we have to load everything in the ZY Plane... not XY as would be more common

We've got about 20 different custom steel vises that just slide onto the magnet, some parts load directly onto the magnet depending on the job.

It's very versatile

In my opinion, because you have to stagger the rows for access, it probably isn't worth the amount of volume you would eat up with more than 2 racks (at least in most cases). Part of me does want to see a duramax with like a 10 tier rack and a measuring volume of 500x10x500mm, just for the comedy....

Could you not make it L shaped all at the same height as the existing rack? You can have stylus racks along the Y axis on other machines, so I would imagine you could have other styli on a cantilever along Y on the right hand side of the machine. That way you aren't taking up any of the volume by having to tier it.

Idk if that would work and I'm not anywhere near a Duramax at the moment, just a thought.

I'm planning on doing that on some of our GageMax's, since we don't need the 750mm of X, but on those you can switch the disc to let you load the plate in 90° rotated from normal.

I don't think there is a way to do it, or locate the XXT plate like that, I'd love to be wrong though.

I believe you are correct Michael, the XXT pockets can only accept the plate in one orientation, which is why the Duramax has its XXT rotated 90degrees from other XXT systems, so that the rack can be on the +Y of the machine instead of the -X

Each tier will have to stick out the equivalent to the width of the head or Z collum. Measure it off and add the clearance for the last tier. Put a pc of tape on the table and see how your fixtures fit !

Thankfully we only have 3 star probes. Everything else sticks off left and right, so 2 tiers, with all the star probes on the bottom will be enough for us.
