Probe qualification program

There are 4 CMM's here that have programs to qualify the probes. 3 are Duramax CMM's and the other is a Prismo with VAST Gold. We have a Contura RDS-CAA Vast XXT head and need to create a program that qualifies all or some of the stylus systems used most frequently. When the stylus systems were created some use CAA qualification and some do not.

I'd like to know how to create a program to qualify system by system. Will I have to re-create the stylus systems so that they all qualify using CAA and let it run its 12 pre-set qualifications? Currently 2-3 stylus systems not using CAA qualification.

The program will be brought into Auto-Run so the shop floor operators can set up the sphere and click the icon and walk away.

If I follow these instructions and the Master probe "qualifies" first.. Are all other previous qualifications linked back to the Master ? I'm not understanding how it relates past qualifications.

If MasterProbe is first, it is (re) Referencing Sphere Position and then the rest of the Stylus Systems are offsets from MasterProbe as usual.

NOTE: I only put MasterProbe in my calibration programs if the Reference Sphere doesn't move or can be placed in the correct location and orientation when I put it back on the CMM. If I can not do that I recommend manually Referencing Sphere Position then running the calibration program

If you have older qualifications (the Calibration Program doesn't run them) than the older stylus data is the offset from MasterProbe when they where calibrated which should still be valid (barring any crashes and such).

If you need to use a Stylus System or Stylus that you do calibrate regularly, that should be calibrated before you use it as best practice.

A lot of my RDS customers have rotations they don't calibrate regularly but have another "Job Specific" Calibration Program that calibrates those rotations before they run those programs

Again the calibration is an offset from MasterProbe, as long as you reference sphere position correctly all your stylus systems should be able to give you good results when you mix and match.

I haven't tried with CAA I would assume it works the same way, I am not a huge fan of CAA because of the potential lose of accuracy, I always calibrate the individual rotations. If I wrote a program for CAA the Reference Sphere should be at position 4 and I am pretty sure I would always use the Quality Passive calibration to keep the uncertainty down as much as possible

I always have one available on my offline seat for compound angle features and occasionally if I have a demo that the customer is bring there own part for me to demo on and I have not even seen the part or the print it nice to have access to any angle just in case.

Currently, I have miniplans for each Stylus sytem. Each miniplan has the Master probe Tensor "qualify" (XT), and then it Geometry requalifies the Stylus system.

The operator must select from the miniplans, however it will always run the Master first on EVERY miniplan, because I don't know how else to ensure it has been run since the last time moved...

If there is a way to work around that without PCM , I'd like to hear it.

Hi Ted, Something I do not see on your .pdf is an explanation of what to use for your Features, your Base/ Start Alignment, or Clearance Plane. Could you please elaborate what is the best practice for this? Also, I use a Zeiss Contura with a Vast XTR head, but I notice your instructions only mention the XXT. Are your instructions "best practice" with the XTR head, as well?

So you have one program that has a separate miniplan for every different stylus system in your rack?
and in every separate miniplan you have the master probe in it?
That means if you were to qualify all of the stylus systems, the master probe will requalify for every single different mini plan that is ran?

What you could try is remove the master probe from every mini plan. Have instructions that says before anything else is done, they must qualify the master probe and then they can run all the mini plans without having to requalify the master every time.
