[Ja...]
Hi all, Currently checking a external involute spline (ANSI B92.1-1996). Question; I am struggling with stylus selection when measuring each tooth. Stylus is qualified in calypso, CMM is linked in gear pro and I am able to see the list of styli to import. Unfortunately, automatic stylus selection didn't seem to work, as it was trying to use the wrong stylus number causing a collision on CMM (luckily speed was turned down)...So as a result, I opted for manual stylus selection; however, the program seems to ignore the styli # number I have chosen for each tooth. For example in screenshot (command says tooth 4, styli 8), but program is still opting to use Styli 4. Could there be something I am missing. Its worth mentioning, I am relatively new to Gearpro and gear measurement in general, so any help is welcome and much appreciated. Thanks to anyone in advance who takes time to read this. Any info needed, please let me know! JackProfile Run.pngProgram Error.png
[Ow...]
It's probably not the stylus chosen but the fact that Gear-pro only works in the Z space-axis and it's trying to go there. So, you have to basically lie to it with a secondary alignment created in Calypso and applied to the gear macro. See attached. The cad model coordinate trigon inside gear-pro will not change but, you will see it in the lower left hand corner of the screen.
[Ja...]
Hi Owen This was really helpful, thanks for your reply! Managed to measure a gear successfully in the horizontal positon, but didn't manage to get all way round without the stylus shanking out. Currently looking at modifying our styli so that I have access to all teeth around the Gear. Any recommendations for a typical stylus setup for this type of measurement would be helpful otherwise thanks again Jack
[Ch...]
I would recommend a larger ball for the pitch and lead measurements. For lead you may need a certain ball/shaft ratio to clear the length of the face width. For involute you will likely need a smaller ball to avoid shanking in the root area. this small ball will likely not have a stem length long enough to also measure lead, so 2 stylus will be needed to cover all tasks. For the involute in this orientation, you can just measure at the end of the face width (Avoiding any chamfers, etc) approx .050"-.0100" from and end face is common practice. Or as deep as you can get without shanking out , etc. Good luck - and congratulations for measuring in the horizontal position. P.S. be careful with stylus system changes in Gear Pro, you may want to add another feed-in, it tends to come back in pretty fast, and perhaps from an undesired direction. [Ja...]
Please sign in to view this quote. Hi Chris, We now have 2 stylus systems setup with styli offset to hopefully check the form and lead of the teeth that the other stylus is unable to reach without shanking. I have ran a cycle on form (profile) only to test, and have had a successful measurement with my 'Gear 1' styli; however the program just stops and fails to measure all teeth. Its like it checks everything it knows it can get too then returns to a safe position and outputs a report. How can I get the software to switch between the available styli? I have linked the CMM calibration data, and have automatic stylus selection switched on. I was hoping the software would do the rest.. Any ideas? Thank youAuto Stylus.JPG
[Ch...]
Jack, this is certainly do-able. I have done it before - strange that it stops before test is complete - only time it really does that I've found is if it determines something is unmeasureable (radius too small) etc. See screenshot of example with multiple styli. I would start by reading the manual on this. Oh another note, with multiple styli in Gear Pro, the approach may not be ideal, so run it slow first time. You also may want to add a feed-in/feed-out before and after changing actual stylus systems in Gear Pro, it would try to do it automatically but has caused collisions in the past. good luck.
