[Jo...]
Hi, Hypothetical. I if happen upon a couple of Calypso v5.xx disks, can you install these and then purchase a SMA to upgrade or are they too old? I imagine they could be one time installs that look for a mac address for original PC. Also, are existing Calypso licenses transferable if i were looking to purchase one? Thanks for any insight. Disclosure - I did receive a quote for new offline seat v7.6 w/Planner. I understand the cost of doing business, but it made me consider other options if there are any. [Ke...]
You could install Calypso 5.xx(maybe, Im ignoring Windows version compatibility), but unfortunately you would not be able to run it due to licensing. 5.8 and older used a different license system than current, that has been obsoleted and is no longer available, and most likely that license is not on those disks and if it is it has almost certainly been used. However, you do not need any version of Calypso installed to acquire an SMA (Calypso can be downloaded from the Zeiss portal for free, the license to run it is what you purchase), so installing an older version would not be necessary for that. With regards to licenses being transferrable, that depends on what you mean by transferrable. There is a process for transferring a license from one computer to another in case of a PC upgrade or replacement, but I do not believe the license ownership can be transferred. [Mi...]
The actual installation files are meaningless. Zeiss has them all freely available for download on the website. Being that old, wherever they were previously licensed was likely PC-Bonded so transferring the license to a new PC without repurchasing SMA is not likely unless you beg and plead your Zeiss Rep. If you need a new seat, just purchase it through Zeiss and make sure it's Dongle based AND GET A NEW DONGLE IN YOUR ORDER AND MAKE SURE THEY UNDERSTAND THIS IS ADDING A NEW DONGLE TO A SEAT THAT PREVIOUISLY DID NOT HAVE IT. The people at Zeiss seem to forget that older installs do not have a dongle and will give you a ton of grief wanting you to go through the lost dongle process and expense for dongles that never existed.... You can transfer Dongle licenses in the event of hardware failure. You don't have to use the latest version of Calypso if you have reason not to, you can get a brand new SMA then only install 2018 if you choose. [Je...]
Joey, You're right to eye affordability. Zeiss, like many, adopts the "software as a service" model, reinforcing the very mindset of ongoing business costs you mentioned. Yet, there's more to business than just costs. It's about strategy and understanding perception of value. Objective value is a myth. Cost can always be negotiated, leveraged or otherwise hedged. [Ri...]
Please sign in to view this quote. If you are the original owner (i.e. your company) of the license, you should be able to update it to the latest version with a purchase of a new SMA. Reach out to either your local sales rep, or your Zeiss Aftermarket Specialist to assist with this. If your goal is to purchase an old license from a reseller, and then just upgrade that, you cannot do that with ease, and it is costly.
