Hello everyone, first of all I would like to thank you all for the oppurtunity that you gave me to learn continously from this forum. Its great that we have something like this.

Now to the topic, The place I work wants to upgrade the software from Calypso 5.4 to the latest version, I was trying to find the advantages, I know its a big jump from the 5.4 to the newest version. Has anyone done the upgrade recently and can tell me the principal upgrades there are to be noted from the upgrade?
Thanks in Advance!!!!!

One of the most important changes is that they introduced a new directory structure from version 5.6 onwards.
No more \home\om\ paths etc. but all user data is now stored in C:\users\public\documents\Zeiss\Calypso <XY>\

For that large of a jump, I would recommend taking some intermediate steps, starting with 5.8, then 6.4, then 7.6. There were some fairly significant changes made to the software, and in my experience I have had the most success when using these intermediaries to handle any conversions or changes or whatever may be being done in the background. You shouldnt need to keep them, just install, bring over your data (make backups before starting this process, and verify your backups. Once you install a newer licensing tool, 5.4 will no longer work), load Calypso so that any conversion that is needed happens, then move to the next version. Once you have done that you can clear out the older versions.

Make sure you have a current license that will allow using 7.6, as well.

Hello, Thank you for your reply.
So we will be upgrading directly from the 5.4 to the latest version, as we already paid for the latest version is it possible to upgrade one by one as we already have the latest version. How does it work?

Previous versions of Calypso are all available for download in the software download portal, for free, and you can install and run any version older than your license version (as long as it is newer than 5.6, due to a change in licensing methodology). You should be able to upgrade incrementally as I described at no further cost.

Installation of Calypso should always be done from oldest to newest version, to avoid conflicts and issues with requirements and dependencies.

Calypso 5.4... I'm assuming this is an old PC too? Window 7? Is your license a Dongle Based License or PC Bonded - it's old enough.

If it's PC Bonded I highly recommend you do not install this on that old PC. It's not worth begging Zeiss to let you re-license it next year when that old PC fails. Get a new PC if that's the case.

If it's a dongle based license it's possible for you to move it later should the PC die.

Otherwise yes follow Harolds advice on installing sequential versions... we've had to do that ourselves.

One feature in particular to watch for is Circles measured with a Partial Circle path set to Single Points - you may find these don't work correctly until you go into the strategy settings and set them correctly again.

If you use "Custom Report", i do believe that is no longer available and you will have to use PiWeb reporting.
not a big deal, but it will be different.
I think Zeiss has classes available for PiWeb

I personally have not made the jump to the newest rev, i am still using 7.2, but i had a discussion with my coworker just this morning about wanting to upgrade.

FYI, if my crusty memory serves me right, i think i was using 5.4 back in 2006-2007 when i first started programming Calypso.

It's still available, but you have to enable it in the compatibility settings first.
