Arc Motion Mode

One of our (Brand-New) Conturas was abruptly stopping and shutting off the drives in the middle of
a program. This happened in the same part of the program. My first thought was a dirty glass scale.
Turns out that turning off the arc motion mode fixed the problem. My question is why would that all
of the sudden cause the drives to shut off. The program has run without this being a problem in the past.

If the drives were shutting off then changing the status of Arc Motion likely did not truly resolve the issue but maybe one stopped the true cause from occurring. The drive monitoring section of the controller is independent of CALYPSO and the two really do not interact. If the drives are shutting off, there is very likely a hardware related issue that is occurring. I would encourage you to recreate the issue, create an Error Report (Extras > Error Report) and open a ticket using the Portal and attach the error report. You should include the Config and Inspection Plan if at all possible. Indicate in the ticket that the drives are shutting off (Hardware issue) and that disabling Arc Motion mitigated the issue.

Any update ? I have a Contura that only does this in Y axis. It seems like an acceleration issue in my case. If you dial back the speed it will run. It has been that way over a year, and thru two calibrations.. I have a service request in now.

Have you contacted CIC for a HW ticket? I do not see a record of this but maybe I missed it. If so, what is the ticket number so that I may review its status please.

This issue is not from a Contura in my value stream. The programmer in that value stream is content with just leaving it as is. Maybe he thinks that as long as turning the arc motion off fixes the problem, why worry about it?

1. It will likely get worse and that workaround will no longer be viable.
2. If its a new CONTURA then it should be under warranty.
3. Maintaining full system functionality and operation increases confidence in the equipment

Imagine what his management will say when they have to experience the resultant down-time and also foot the repair bill in 2+ years for something that was known internally while still under warranty.

Just to clarify, so what you mean is "No action taken". Your statement could very easily have been misinterpreted as the ZEISS Service team had not resolved the issue. This was how I read it and in turn took it to our HW team who took this very seriously.

A ticket was never initiated for this.

Actually, I've just been updated on this. Initially the programmer was content with keeping the arc motion off to fix it.
Now I'm told the drives were shutting off again even with arc motion on. So, he looked a little deeper and found that
the top inside of the bridge near the X way was full of plastic debris. The CMM is just a few feet from a saw used to
cut plastic. That has all been cleaned out, as well as the glass scales. Since this, the problem has not repeated.
