2d curves / point cloud eval

Hi,

I'm scanning cylinder head valve port combustion area along with intake/exhaust surfaces. I created 2D curves using clipping plane in creating new features and scanned. I put the scans into a point cloud and compared/evaluated scans to model data. Is this the proper method/practice? My results are a little skewed. I'm not sure what to do when it comes to the evaluation portion - in regards to best fitting everything, filters, eliminating outliers , etc..

Should I create 3D curves instead? Hopefully someone out there does a lot of cylinder hear work or similar. Thanks in advance!
