Freeform Best Fit

Haven't taken the freeform class and just need to wrap my head around a situation that I currently have. I have a tri-flat gage. Picture a bore with a flat every 60°, then a radius for 60°, then another flat, so on. I have a profile of the flats to the ID of the bore, Datum X. I've created a 3 circle path cylinder for Datum X. Scanned the flats as separate freeforms slowly and with a couple hundred points each. Recalled the freeforms into another and reported the profile to datum X.

Now, where am I ticking/unticking best fit? In the recalled freeform or in the individuals? Also as these flats are parallel to the axis of Datum X (+Z direction), do I untick best fit for X Y translation/rotation? Or do I leave those unticked and tick Z translation and rotation. I can't recall if being ticked/unticked performs the best fit.

Box checked means it is best fitting.

My best guess is that you only want rotation and translation around Z.

If you only selected datum feature X as the primary datum in your Profile, Calypso should best fit everything automatically. After you close the Profile window, open the Default Report and it should show what translations/rotations took place. In other words, best fitting in the FFS feature is not necessary.

Not necessary in this instance or not necessary anytime? I have a FFS that I'm evaluating
as surface profile to itself, so I would allow translation and rotation of all axis correct?

If you are using Profile callout without datums, then use No datums instead of filling something.
Checking any options in FF is more usefull for creating new alignment from it.
