[Ja...]
Hi all, I am wanting to move our entire probe rack (photos below) from the RHS of the CMM running along the Y axis, to the back of the CMM running in the X axis. This is for clearance purposes, such as the 3 meter shaft we currently have sat on the machine! As you can see, we have RDS and fixed head probes stored in the rack...I am just wondering the process for doing this, as I haven't set up probes/racks before. I'm assuming I need to qualify both master probes (RDS and fixed head), at A0 B0 and A90 B0? Just wanting some words of wisdom from someone, as anything that can go wrong, normally does go wrong. In my case anyway... Cheers in advance!Rack View.jpgRack New Position.jpgRack Current Postion.jpg
[Ke...]
You will need to have a qualified Masterprobe in the proper orientation (do not know the orientation off the top of my head)-the RDS XXT Masterprobe for the XXT pockets, and the VAST Masterprobe for the VAST pockets. You will need to ensure that the rack is square after relocating it (fortunately, a CMM is an excellent tool for doing this), and you will need to reteach each pocket. However, prior to teaching each pocket you will need to tell the CMM that its orientation has changed to approach in the +Y direction(for the rear of the machine), as it should currently be approaching +X. This is done in the approach parameters of each pocket, accessed through this dropdown You will also need to change the orientation of the disc in the rear of the probe holders so the probes insert into the holder correctly. Keep in mind that the orientation of the probes will not change-for example those long -Y probes you have in the rack will remain in -y, so they will no longer be parallel to the rack, but will stick into the volume, so be careful with navigation when running programs the first time. Moving the rack is something that the Zeiss Helpdesk could assist with, if you have any issues or questions. [Er...]
I would practice setting up the current rack. That way I wouldn't be trying to learn and do at the same time. I would save the current rack. Then start with a blank setup in Calypso. Duplicate the "new" rack under a different name and save it. I would also start a new rack in Calypso. Some of the holders will need to be moved in the new orientation. Set all of the presets and get the holders arranged in Calypso. Set the probes to the holders. That way all I would have to do is tell Calypso where they are with the master probe.

This isn't related to your question (it looks like the other folks have it covered), but I was wondering how your RDS sensor performs for verifying that size of shaft. I've had issues verifying .0003" or better for size, form, or orientation using an RDS on long shafts. Perhaps you have looser tolerances or better measurement strategies than I was using. Otherwise, I prefer VAST sensors for shafts. .
[Ja...]
Please sign in to view this quote. Hi Jeff, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, we are working to +/-0.005" on the turned OD sizes that we measure with our RDS Head, overchecked manually with a mic, and so far we haven't had any major issues, though we haven't done many formal repeatability studies on this part yet (biggest shaft size we have done so far). I don't think we use anything out of the ordinary in terms of measurement strategy, just two circle path scans either side of the diameter, connected together and tolerance as a diameter. We have run out tolerances to 0.001" referenced to two faces which are ground, and they seem to be verifying okay. Like I say though, this is a new part and I haven't been running the Zeiss machine very long with the RDS head, so I'll keep this in mind if we have any issues.
