Stylus change navigation paths

Has anyone ever used custom navigation paths with automatic stylus change?

In the past we used a ProMax rack and so didn't have to worry about stylus change collisions most of the time. Now we have a quite large Contura and a standard rack, but still there are some awkward combinations with very long styli in +Y and -Y that might collide with each other while navigating near the rack. To handle the worst possible case I would have to define a rack distance of about 400 mm to be on the safe side, so I'm looking for alternatives.
But somehow I don't get how the path system works (when and where does it use which path?) and how it interacts with the "classic" before/after/side distances. Is there some intelligible tutorial to be found anywhere?
