Filtering

I understand why to filter uninterrupted circles with Gauss.
What about a circle with an interrupted surface? Two circle
segment scans like this. Would I then use Spline?

Yes. I'll see if I can find the reference. Using Gauss on an open circle produces "flairs" at the edges.

As far as I know the spline filter is more stable on the edges and should be used with interrupted contours while the gauß filter in terms of closed ones. But unfortunately I cant give you any reason for this assertion.
