Scanning a "Plane" that is actually a Cone

Hello.

I am scanning a .030" thick stamped metal surface that is nominally defined as a plane but due to forming is more like a cone (see scan arrows below).

Should I rescan this surface as a cone using the captured cone angle, or should the points interpolate correctly as is?

This all depends on what the plane is to be used for.

If you're capturing the form(Flatness), location, or alignment use a plane with outer tangential so you grab the high points. Or (and maybe a more preferred way) you can use a separate plane and recall only the outer ring points.

If you're reporting the form/error of the surface, then I would report the cone angle and maybe the Z-Value of each diameter area so you can see the slope.

Something like this, I would output into a color representation with scan lines drawn from outside towards the center.

What is the distance from high point to low point? I don't know know much about other sensors but I have an XXT. The XXT will not compensate for surface variation when scanning if it's too bad. I don't know what the limit is. I would have to switch from scanning to single points and make sure the search distance is larger than the form error. You can adjust that under resources- feature setting editor- probing- search distance before nominal position.

That's a great idea, Andre. Here's what form deviation looks like using the original circle paths on the plane as well as a line profile of the center section:

Absolutely.

Fortunately, our VAST Gold is capturing the points just fine, and I included the option for "search distance before nominal" to accommodate for the form error.
