Renaming a stylus system

Before I started my current job, my workplace had one CMM programmer who didn't really know what he was doing. He wrote a number of programs we still use regularly, but he only ever qualified one stylus, and he left the name at the default "New Stylus System".

As I've added new styluses, I've come up with my own naming scheme, but it bugs me that this one doesn't fit with the rest. What's the simplest way to rename a stylus system?

The only "rename" option I see is to rename an individual stylus, not the whole system itself. I know I can copy the system, rename the copy, then assign the copy to the original's rack location, but that would also require opening (potentially) several hundred programs and reassigning the features to the new stylus system.

I don't think you can do anything with a stylus once its in use by multiple programs, without having to edit all the programs that use that stylus.
I think in the old forum a guy/gal was trying to do that, and the cmm went into maximum destruct mode because it didn't know what stylus is was supposed to be using.

I had the same problem because we had custom stylus named for the customer, but that stylus then became used in many other programs, and when Customer X wants a program sent to them but all the stylus info is named for Customer Y, that led me to spend a lot of time updating programs.

So your OCD will go on.

Will all the programs that reference this stylus recognize the change automatically? Or will I still have to reassign it in each program one by one?

Hmm, I've never used it. The manual only refers to it under the heading "Searching and replacing measurement
plan feature names", so I'm guessing it won't search stylus names.

You will have to re-assign each one, but if you delete the original it will prompt you as soon as you open the measurement plan to re-assign.

I had to do something like this several years ago in a place we had over 4 thousand programs.
You might not have enough programs to make it useful but, I've attached an macro-driven excel file that will search the inspection folder, find and list every program that uses the searched for probing system.
(1) enable marcro's if prompted.
(2) click "Find Probe Usage Per Program" and go to the folder where your programs are stored - C:\Users\Public\Documents\Zeiss\CALYPSO\workarea\inspections.
(3) type the name of the probing system you're looking for, it must be typed exactly as how it's named in calypso.

I think I got this file from Ryan Stuaffer several years ago, so, it's safe to use macro wise.

I have over a thousand programs that I want to change the stylus naming. Do I have to go into each program's inspection file and replace with the new probing names or is there a shortcut or macro that can help accomplish this?

Unfortunately yes. I've been wanting to change the stylus names on mine. The old programmer had a very anti OCD naming scheme. We have 10 different stylus systems and other 4000 programs. NO THANK YOU!!! 🙄
