Profile to only one or two datums

I have a part that is calling for the surface profile of a plane to another datum. It is the top plane to a cylinder on the side. My characteristic turns pink or magenta. I remember there was something silly you had to do for this to come out correctly...like make primary, secondary, and tertiary all the cylinder, which does yield a result, but is that the proper method? or do I need to make some secondary alignment and try to evaluate to the alignment?

What you want to do is create a secondary alignment. Resources -> Utilities -> Alignment. Enter the two datums in their respective slots. Then you want to create a Geometry Best Fit Alignment. Resources -> Utilities ->Geometry best Fit. Open it and change the alignment from Base Alignment to your new Alignment, "Alignment1". Click on the Evaluation Constraints and UNcheck the degrees of freedom your two datums control. Close window. You can now use this Geometry Best Fit Alignment to complete your profile characteristic. In the profile characteristic you will see a pull down menu label "Datum Reference Frame" Open it ->Alignment -> Geometry Best Fit.

Don't add the same feature as the primary, secondary and tertiary datum. This was a less-than-ideal workaround that Zeiss recommended for a time. Follow Roy's instructions above. That is the correct method.

I wish this site had a better breakdown of topics, for example GD&T. Then how-to's like this could be stickied or starred under those topics. This would eliminate my constant forum bookmarks 🤣
