[To...]
Customer was running machine this morning but then got a License Violation message. I did a zoom meeting and the license manager and all of the licenses to appear to be active. I checked the USB connection with Device Manager and it stated device was working properly though I don't if that proves if the dongle is working correctly. What else could be wrong?Screenshot 2022-08-09 100239.jpg
[Th...]
Assuming this was a previously functioning install? Licenses are probably fine, so maybe have the client visually verify the dongle. Make sure its little LED is lit, move it to another USB port, etc. I think these dongles are read-only, so there's not really any wear on them other than the minute thermal cycle stress from powering on and off. Unfortunately, the dongle is inside the computer and the computer is buried in the cabinet of the DuraMax base. I was hoping to not make the customer go through this because it is sort of a pain, which is why I tried using Device Manager to verify that it was active. Do you feel that this is not a true test of it's condition?
[Th...]
I don't actually know where the crypto dongle shows up in Device Manager. Looking at the license management tool, though, if it's showing the status for the licenses as "connected", then it would mean the dongle is working fine and the tool sees it. Probably no need to pull the hardware. Maybe double-check the software version? If the client has an IT department managing the workstation, they could have pushed a new major version, or applied some weird security policy preventing Calypso from properly accessing the licenses, or some such thing. [Je...]
Please sign in to view this quote. . Crypto dongle?? Is that what this is: . . This is going to sound really stupid, but I seriously didn't know what this was. I thought maybe a former programmer had been mining bitcoin or something 🤣 . [Th...]
Oh, now I see it. It's listed as CBUSB in the device manager.
[To...]
Please sign in to view this quote. Customer is running version 6.8 and still has ZLAU, which shows "Certificate" under the Status column. The computer is not on a network but still may have some connection with IT. Will try to rule that out.

[Th...]
I had a look at one of our machines that hasn't been updated to the new license tool. ZLAU shows which licenses are active and inactive by changing the rows between light and dark grey. If they're light grey, the license utility and the dongle are fine and the problem is elsewhere. If you haven't already covered the basics of the basics, a full system reboot might be in order. Uptime on systems like these is usually pretty high. Also might be a good opportunity to get them on the new tool, even if they're not planning on upgrading Calypso. Overall I think ZLMT is a better piece of software. [To...]
UPDATE Finally had customer open up case. No red light. Customer unplugged and re-plugged in dongle. Red light on. Calypso working. So, device manager is not totally accurate for determination of working dongle. Thanks to everyone's input.
[Th...]
On the off chance this happens again, your client might consider moving the dongle to one of the exterior USB ports. If they're using the shop floor base, it's protected enough to not be at risk of getting ripped out of the port or anything, and it would save the hassle of having to pull the whole workstation out to check on it. I'm thinking about doing this on our newer CMMs with those bases here.

[No...]
Please sign in to view this quote. Some time ago "somebody" (I suspect the Zeiss tech who was doing maintenance at the time) managed to rip off the RJ45 socket from the PC's network card at our O-Inspect 322. Took us a while to find out why the network connection was gone. Sometimes even internal equipment isn't protected enough.

Most things are a tradeoff between convenience and durability/security/etc. I would say in this case the odds of the dongle getting damaged if it's contained in the shop floor base are pretty low, and could be further reduced by using a rear USB port. Access to it via the side panel vs. the hinged front panel isn't a huge difference in time spent.
