Construct material thickness - parameters

Hi,

I would like to calculate the thickness of a plate at a particular location. For this purpose, I use the function 'construct material thickness' (Construct-Distance-MaterialThickness). 

Step 1: I define a dot at the top of the plate. 
Step 2: I select the entire mesh. Atos software will automatically decide where to put the point at the bottom of the plate.
Result: Material thickness = 0.739mm and this is correct 🙂

But... How does the software calculate the material thickness? Is this material thickness the minimum/maximum/average? How should I interpret expert parameters 3 (max angle between normals) and 4 (max opening angle)?

Could someone give me more information about the feature 'construct material thickness'?
