Can I measure this .005" radius?

Do you think it's feasible to measure this .005" radius on a torus using a 0.2mm ruby? Is it a fool's errand?

Any suggestions or strategies?

If it's a plastic part and there is no surface profile surface tolerance then no. Otherwise, maybe, but is going to be hard.

I was assigned to measure it and report as is for a new product investigation. It is a stamped stainless steel part. There is no tolerance assigned. Unfortunately we don't have a comparator, and the tooling is in production. I'll give this a shot, and if it seems to not be feasible, I'll just let the engineer know.

I like trying the difficult to measure stuff. It's most of what I do. Test the limits. I probably should have been an experimental test pilot or something edgy like that.

Do you have a Calibrated Eyeball anywhere in the shop?
I say not possible, but if you were to try id suggest taking 5 points and not a scan.

Hi. Just following up on how this experiment went. I'd give it a B+.

The first few samples were slightly warped, which made capturing the .005" radii difficult. The remaining samples were doable, aided by the fact that there was a slight draft to the side walls. The limiting factor was that the actual size of the probe is .004065, so if the actual radius is smaller than the probe, it won't capture correctly.

I created curve sections and then recalled points from the radius areas into circle features.

muhahahahaha 🤣 . I hear you. If it were for normal production, then yes. The engineer wanted to troubleshoot a problem, so we needed more specific data.
