[Je...]
Hello. I was just wondering... what has everyone's experience been concerning Zeiss's acquisition of GOM? Has your company purchased any GOM hardware or software? If so, what is your impression? Zeiss is marketing GOM aggressively. One of our sister companies recently purchased a Metrotom CT system. I was really excited when I heard this, but then I learned that they opted to install GOM volume inspect to operate the Metrotom rather than Calypso 😕

We own both a T-Scan Hawk and now a Metrotom 1. Both use GOM Inspect for Point Cloud Inspection. Here is what I will say, Calypso is a great piece of inspection software, but the ability to inspect point clouds was a function that was added much-much later into its life cycle - while it has come a long way, there are still a lot of issues. GOM Inspect has always been designed to handle point clouds, so the ease-of-use has always been there. It is great at what it does. Calypso still revolves around you needing to build things like strategies and evaluation parameters because it was designed for CMMs. This is not the case for GOM Inspect. Also the ability to use something like the Local Best-Fit inside of GOM Inspect is your most powerful tool, and the easiest to use. It is a life-saver for plastic injection-molding, or casting/forgings. Bottom line, I love Calypso, but I love it on the CMM. I love GOM Inspect, but I love it on the non contact scanners. Calypso is fairly cumbersome when handling point clouds. I also appreciate that GOM offers free training on its software. I plan to look into this. I've set up STL evaluation as an alternative on all of our CMM and offline seats, but never used it. In fact I've even become reluctant to use the CMM if I have a choice. My only fear is that one day the GOM Inspect development may be delegated to the Calypso software department... 😕

[No...]
I find the GOM forum very useful, because you get a lot of answers from GOM support people, which is the opposite to the Zeiss forum (this is not to say that answers here are less qualified 😃 ). In some cases they even posted explanatory videos. Of course we have a SMA, so our forum access level may be different.
