torus profile

Currently have a few torus features on my part i'm checking and they have profile callouts. In the past this was no issue because i had curve. My new job I do not have a curve license and it doesn't look like i'll be getting it this year. Is there any other way to report/check it other than doing a bunch of points on it and reporting the worst one as the profile??? Not sure on the best way to go about this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I've use space points/space point distance in the past for just such a scenario.
I haven't tried it, but you should be able to pull a torus into a surface profile characteristic.

I tried pulling the torus in and it doesn't work. So I am currently using points but don't really want to do that. I have quite a few and will take some time. Just looking for another work around

It it like 7 grand now b/c they added freeform to it for one license. We were going to grab it this year but we had a big customer back out of a big contract job so we are waiting for more cash flow at the beginning of the year now. Plus it was mainly going to be for their project. But I would use curve over most of our jobs but just isn't worth it at this time.

Hi. I had a similar issue. Question does your torus have a datum reference frame?
I think you may need freeform/curve either way.

Theoretically, profile of a torus should be doable in Calypso. I believe I put a request in for it at My Voice portal, please vote it up.

no i tried that as well. Pretty sure i need the curve/free form license. I just ended up putting points on it following the circle paths I would have used and reported the Max.

Have you tried using "General surface" feature under Features > Special Geometries. It is a time consuming process but may work for you. You can pull this feature into a surface profile characteristic.

If you have Free-Form, measure the Torus as a Torus, and then recall feature points into the Free-Form. Make sure to associate the Free-Form to the Torus surface.

I've been battling with torus. The best solution I came up is to creating features under CAD menu. I do a section on torus area then select circle under creation tab. Go to circle feature and adjust the path. I use radius for result.


I only have curves license

For general surface:
first, Make sure you have the same stylus selected that you would use to measure that feature ( otherwise it will be a pain to change stylus later on)
then open feature window and start clicking points on the CAD model then click OK.

do you have to have freeform to use general surface? I'm just wondering, because I'm running into an error and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it to upgrade to from 7.0.02 to 7.4 or not.

Lol, oh I know. As soon as I saw it pulled in as a Torus, I was not happy. I see there are a couple different workarounds for getting my surface profile measurement, but I'm wondering what the best method is? I'm going to try to get my company to buy freeform eventually, but that might take some time.

Zach,

Hi. This looks like it should be do-able since you have a CAD model.
You may not even need to slice/section the CAD model if Calypso recognizes the torus feature.

Keep in mind tori (plural of torus) have a different clearance path / keep an eye on OD/ID switch for torus.- they often get inverted.

Once selected and ID/OD set right you should be able to measure 4 or more circle circle paths.

On Calypso 2021 and newer you should be able to do a torus surface profile to datums, however since you do not have tertiary you may have to make a secondary alignment to A|B and use this in the DRF selection in profile to get a result.

Note on your DRF A|B with A being so short it obviously does not make a good primary datum axis. You may want to inquire about using B then A if possible.

I appreciate the response. Unfortunately, I'm running 2020 (7.0.02) and it will not let me select a torus in the profile dialog box. Is there any other way to get around not having freeform/curve?

Zach,

I see. I think FFS and General Curve are your best alternative options. Curve wont really report proper surface profile - rather curve form to itself.

One idea I have never tried but may be a grey area work around - if you can create a cylinder that lies along exactly where each of the 4 circle paths you will measure with same nominals as each circle section, you may be able to profile each cylinder.

I would ask for FFS license - it is essential with most new drawings.

Now that's an interesting idea. I just have to be at exactly 0º/90º/180º/270º and I should be able to report those cylinder profiles.
