An artifact is an object with known dimensions to compare to the CMM measurements. I don't think they are referring to a specific artifact.

If you're looking for squareness, a lot of CNC machine maintenance people have these that they use to square machining centers in with when moved
Maybe you could borrow or purchase one if you don't have one..

I used to use one of these at another facility and it offers a little more verification methods than just squareness but, nothing like the artifacts Zeiss sales.

The document specifically says a ball bar or long gage block is typically used.
I could not find info in the Zeiss Portal's "Knowledge Base."
precisionballs website has good information.
Google "ball bar" cmm squareness

Could you just not show the Spatial checks from the calibration protocol?

Zeiss does all this for you when they calibrate the machine, and as long as you are calibrating yearly, I don't see why you would need to come back behind them an perform a check that isn't even as robust or accurate as what they are doing.

You could purchase a complete solution with an artifact and ready to go measuring plans from Zeiss. Sure, it's expensive, but... well, you know... Zeiss.
