Folded vs Unfolded Measurements

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any fancy ways of measuring a folded piece of metal, and then calculating the unfolded length?

Is it just a simple formula regarding length, and angle?

Can you create a curve from a cross section and use the "curve distance" characteristic? I've never actually used this one, but I thought it might be a possibility.

If you are talking sheet metal. When you start calculation there are bend allowances(approximations) that take into account the alloy, bend radius, tooling clearances, and stretch of the material. Think of this as the midplane of the sheet.

To extract the "flat" length you need to offset that polyline half the material thickness, because the material stretches on the outside of the bends. In practice the theoretical calculation would get revised to achieve desired result.

I don't have the parts, and/or CAD models yet to test, but I'm thinking I'm going to attempt something with Curve.

I also feel like I might be able to do this in GOM Inspect. I just need to do some testing.

I think you could scan the profile, extract each side, get curve lengths, and average the two. That should give you the midline length. Again, this is the current state of the material AFTER stretching. It will not provide you with "flat" pattern length before bending.
