Battery Backup for CMM?

Hello all.

Our expiration date on the CMM's battery backup is coming up. At first when I saw this I thought this cant be true. I was wrong. The CMM is connected to a battery backup (APC Model: Back-UPS 900) which I think is too small for a CMM even if its just idling.

Have any of you needed a battery backup? And do any of you have a story about the power shutting off in the middle of a run?

I'm curious but not curious enough to test it on our CMM.

Thanks in advanced!

We have some UPS but i don't know details. But once we died in middle of measuring. With some effort we succesfully continued after power on. I don't know how big should be battery to backup and stand for power loss for a few sec. I saw only 2 or 3 blackouts for more than 30 mins in 13 years in factory.

That UPS is enough to run a smaller machine for a brief time period. If I take the Contura's spec sheet rating for typical draw at 200 watts, APC's site gives an estimate of 13 minutes of battery time. A Duramax would run for 20. Depending on what CMM you're running, and whether or not you also have the controlling PC hooked up to the battery (you probably should), consider upsizing.

Regardless, I wouldn't *run* a CMM on battery. If there's a power outage that I don't expect to be resolved for a while, the UPS is there so I have enough time to cleanly shut down my equipment.

I have a UPS XS-1500 on our Accura II.
The CMM & PC are both hooked up, and no issues when the power goes off for a minute or so.
Any longer than that and I shut down the program, and get it to a safe zone.

We have 2 separate 6 kw power supplies for our 2 Cmm device. Batteries are checked with our annual maintenance agreement. We can experience 3-4 times a year downtime.

We got a BB on our cmm's. they're all different but they're all about the size of a shoe box.
No problems keeping the CMM's running for a good amount of time, our problem during shutdown is air pressure.

All we have are the UPS for every machine, which will maybe run the machine for 15 minutes if the power goes out. We don't get power outages too often but when we do its been way longer then 15 minutes so basically its there for us to shut down properly.

A couple years ago I purchased the APC XS1500 UPS for our Prismo 12x42x10 and have never been happier with its performance. As you stated it allows enough time to safely stop the running program and shut down everything.
