Purpose of healing cad model

This may not be a good question, but I would like to ask what is the purpose of healing CAD model and what option should I select a different option is there and what does the tolerance mean?

from what I understood, if you choose simplification and stitching, it's the same thing as Build Geometry. So I always use Build Geometry, leave on Correct Boundary Curves and set the tolerance to .0004 (which is set by default). This corrects any small gaps in construction lines and planes in the model. I often do this to each model before anything else but I don't know if it's necessary all the time. I would wonder if .010 is a bit too much of a correction since we have some close surfaces that I might not want stitched.

I have no idea what the tolerance refers to. From my experience
the healing repairs "mistakes" in the model from when it is created.

I seen less mistakes when I use a .step file as opposed to some of the other file extensions.

The tolerance is the maximum distance allowed to stitch a gap in the model.

Healing is fully defined on page 3 of the attached document.
Layman's disclosure, there are scenarios when healing the model can screw it up so, typically if I'm not experiencing any issues using the model in calypso, I don't heal.

For our NX models I neaver heal. I just use "remove free lines and points" and "join faces with same geometry". But I guess it depends on how accurate and disciplined the designer was. Recently, I've started to design some fixtures for 3D printing myself and I'm beginning to understand how much you can mess up a model by using the wrong design methods 😮

We have a couple of jobs here were we load components of an assembly into Calypso and via Hierarchy and Transformation put it together. Hierarchy allows you to turn the individual components off and on and Transformation allows the movement and rotation of those components. If you do a healing process all of the individual components are joined and the result is one single entity which is a nightmare to work with.

That is true and is another reason why I never heal. Without healing I'm able to make small changes, e.g. to fixtures for simulation, just by moving things around a bit. If you want a healed assembly, the only option is to heal each component individually and resave in SAT format.

I know that if you are creating a measurement plan without a model, after creating your features you can select Automatic Healing and hit OK with the default settings. Then the "Clearance Plane from Model" button will be active when setting your clearance plane safety cube.
That is the extent of my knowledge on this. 😃
