CAD Model not loading

Hey guys,

When I try to upload a CAD model to Calypso I keep getting error when trying to the load the model. The model is a .step file. I never had issues before but now I keep getting an error. See the attached for the error call out. The CAD models are downloaded from a system we use from the company and they are uploaded to JAVA and I would have to save the model from JAVA to a file on a desktop. I never I had an issue before but I cannot get the CAD models to load into Calypso.

Thanks.

Its the CAD kernel or simulation losing it's connection.

I get this from time to time when I switch on/off from the company VPN. (All open sockets are restarted so some of them can be encrypted) So the only advice I can give is to talk to your IT guys and ask if something funky goes on when you use "JAVA".

I usually solve it by pressing ok, and redo what ever I did.

I agree with Eric.

In addition, I've also seen this if I try to import a model that is corrupted, or in the wrong format/not supported.

Ensure that you can open the model in your CAD package software if possible.

Yeah, I am going to talk with IT guy to see what he can do, and also with Engineering because they upload it to JAVA.

Thanks

This is where I get the CAD models from, and the process to save them in the desktop as .stp or .step file. I did this before, and Calyspo would be able to upload them. But now it will give me the error as shown in the first post. Is a conversion problem, or should I talk with IT and engineering about the situation?

Thanks.

See attached.

Hi Adrian,
It looks like it's outputting an .stl (stereolithography) file and not a .stp file. Change the output to .stp and see if that works.

The only other thing I can think of other that what has been suggested is to check the version of STEP/SAT file it's exporting. Newer/different versions of .stp & .sat are not compatible with older/different versions of Calypso. If you've changed no settings and it doesn't work the way it did then I would suspect you have a corruption/communication problem.

STEP files can be opened in a TXT editor.

Can you at least share a snippet of what the header looks like when you open it in a TXT editor?

Thanks.

You don't need to change the file format to access it in a text editor. At a minimum, you should have Notepad installed, so you would go file > Open, change the extension filter to all files, and pick the STEP file. Alternately, you can open Notepad and drag the file onto it.

Well, if that used to be a STEP file I can verify that Calypso 2018 REALLY doesn't like it.

I can't pretend to know STEP's structure, but it looks substantially different from my own files. Looping back to what Robert said earlier in the thread, when you used that Convert option in AutoVue, did you convert it to an STL? The settings in the first screenshot you posted of that program suggest that.

I change it to .stp when I save it but calypso is not able to open it and would give me that error when I first posted. But before it would work. But I am not sure the cause but when I updated Java AutoVue would not open but when the IT guy looked at it, he told me the engineers do not used the current version of JAVA. So the IT went back and uploaded the previous version of JAVA. But AutoVue would open but now the .stp files would not open from Calypso. Do you think Calypso was trying to open a .stp file that is coming from an old version? or it does not matter?

OK, I just verified your file is an STL file, which explains why Calypso throws a fit. I managed to get it to open in Paint 3D and IronCAD with the .stl extension, and not at all with the .stp extension.

I'd like to cover a basic check here: how are you saving it out of AutoVue for use in Calypso? If it worked before your Java adventure, I assume you're converting it back to STEP and not just changing the file extension? If so, then your program isn't actually doing any conversion right now.

Looking back at your photos that you posted, it appears that it is already in STEP format, and you are converting it to an STL.

On your output, make sure you drop down and select STEP instead of leaving it on STL.

I go to file then convert, and it opens that window, then I changed from .stl to .stp, and click on browse and save it into the desktop, then to the models folder.

If you're telling it to convert to STEP, then it seems to me there's something wrong with either the AutoVue program or your Java environment. Most likely this will fall to your IT department, or I guess to Oracle support.
