[Ke...]
10+ Years experience on a CMM, and LOTO has never been an issue... but... is there a LOTO procedure that anyone uses? Or, is there a sound justification for not requiring one? In my experience, the problem is getting the CMM to move again, not keeping it from moving 🤣
[Ri...]
The easiest way to accomplish this is with the key switch on your controller or it might be on the operator end of the Y axis. Turn the key to the "0" position and pull the key. Now your joysticks and controller won't move.

[No...]
I honestly admit, before this post I had never heard of LOTO. I had to google the meaning. 🤣 Sounds like a new swollen-headed name for a self-evident thing, allowing safety inspectors, who already pushed safety to a ridiculous limit, to further justify their existence. Sorry for grumbling, I'm speaking out of bad experience. 😡
[To...]
Ha Ha Norbert. It really is a serious issue on the machine tool side. Not so much on CMMs's. Technicians can be working on a machine out of sight and someone else will start up the machine.
[Me...]
Ha, Tom is right. We have had Process Techs fired for not correctly following our procedures of LOTO. This is the first I've heard for a CMM though. Seems outright silly.
[Ri...]
There is a lockout on the main power switch. When it's in the off position, there's a place where a tech can put a small padlock so the machine cannot be turned on inadvertently.
[Mi...]
In addition to the main power switch our procedure also covers the compressed air supply that has a lockable handle and also the air dryer.
[Ke...]
Thanks all. We did incorporate the main power switch, and the air supply... just hope the procedure does not walk over the Zeiss technicians procedures. From what I hear (from the tech) that can create another cumbersome mess, procedurally... I don't think I have ever seen a tech shut off the air to to their job, so I'm hoping there won't be an issue
[Tr...]
Our LOTO simply has us unplugging the whole machine. Although adding in a lockout requirement for the air supply would be better (as mentioned above). We are able to cut off the air supply with a handle by the wall. We just don't explicitly state its use for the LOTO of our CMMs.

When the air is cut off, a cover is placed on it and locked, so someone doesn't turn the air on accidentally.
