Can anyone tell me what's the technical difference between the VAST XT and XT gold head?
I mean besides the golden letters and the golden price tag. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The "Gold" version was designed and intended for Navigator systems that can run scarey fast. Running at Navigator speeds means collisions are typically spectacular and extraordinarily costly. The VAST Gold and VAST XT Gold are built so they maintain good durability running at those speeds day in and day out and can withstand a knock or two.

Then we must be extraordinarily unlucky ๐Ÿคฃ
The last 17 years of owning our Contura were a sad story of many (>10) VAST XT head replacements, some only lasting 6 months, two having a twisted probe holder, etc.
Some weeks ago, when the last head went bad after 5 years (yay!), we got an XT gold for the first time. It needed only two weeks to break down ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

At least it can carry longer (500 mm instead of 300 mm) and heavier probes. Now if that isn't something!

It's really important to balance your stylus systems, or what Zeiss calls "Tilt Torque". I've attached a segment from their Styli Handbook. An unbalanced stylus system is constantly using the tare motors ( I know I'm probably not using the correct terminology) to keep it balanced causing premature failures.

Most of our probes are balanced. Some of them can't be because there's not enough space. My personal opinion is that some refurbished heads are of questionable quality. When two heads in succession have twisted probe holders right out of the box, something is wrong ๐Ÿ˜ก

Tom, do you have any specs on the XTR head ? I always try to balance best I can. How do you find the L1 length ?

Unfortunately, I do not have any info on the XTR. Even though I understand the math but I don't know how to calculate the L1 value. Hold it up between 2 finger until it appears balanced???? ๐Ÿ˜‰

That's pretty much what I came up with ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ But , the XTR spec. would be interesting. I hear people say they run with L shaped set ups. I always run with T setups to maintain balance.
