Gear Pro PDF not exporting

I'm getting a Pop-Up window indicating that PDF export could not be made for the tool "GEAR PRO PDF Printer" - PDF export has been switched off.

I'm still using the 2018 version with SP2.

It's been working fine before. All of the settings (parameters) for PDF exporting are still there. I checked the settings under the Presentation and the regular Setup. Within the Setup, the Tolerance/Export tab, in the Results to file, the PDF export has been grayed-out.

What could have cause this to happened or do I need the GEAR PRO PDF printer's driver installed. And if so, is that a separate download or from the installation. My thought is that this should have been installed already.

Yours thoughts and directions for a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

PS. We are planning to upgrade to the latest 2024 version pending Windows 10 upgrade. In the meantime, we hope to resolve this simple issue.

Did this just start happening, or have you perhaps not been saving out PDFs until just now? My initial guess is that the Gear Pro PDF printer did not get created properly. I would search your installed printers and make sure it is there (do keep in mind, though, that it uses the same driver as the Zeiss PDF Printer7, so sometimes it is a bit hidden, you may need to check with your IT).

If it is not there, I would try to install it from the installation media for your current version. I don't have it handy just now, but I believe if you open up the exe that's in there, you should be able to install it from the tools option or something like that.

I appreciated the feedback. So, I checked the workstation printers and did not see any with "GEAR PRO PDF" printer name. The "Zeiss PDF Printer" is there, just not the gear pro printer.

This is all that's in the Tool folder from the download for version 2018.

I went ahead and install the 2 bottom exe files but still was not showing on the Device and Printer page either. The 1st file looks like the one but can't install. It's not showing up when I try to search and install it manually from that folder:

This is what we have for printers on this Workstation, just the Zeiss PDF Printer:

It's missing the Gear Pro PDF printer.

Should be a simple process, but I'm just not seeing it. This is a specific Printer and so might need more in-depth help.

Let me know what you have or anyone.

Doesn't look like the Zeiss PDF Printer7 is there either (yes, the printer7 is different from just the printer). You do have to run that vbe file, if possible, to install the printer. The bottom two files are just drivers and don't actually add the printer. The vbe should have the commands to create the printer.

You can try to create it manually if you can't get that to run, but it is a bit of a hassle. If you have an SMA, I would probably just recommend you give us a call to set up a ticket and we will help you out when we are available.

My experience is that it´s a waste of time to try to install the printer manually. Just deinstall the software and make a fresh installation of GEAR PRO again. Also you can search in the ZEISS Portal if there is a newer bugfixed patch version of the 2018 version available. After that the printer should be back again as expected. If not any support for the 2018 version is "difficult". I hope your Windows Update will happen soon and you can update to the 2024 version of GEAR PRO or starting from May 2025 already to the GEAR PRO 2025 version?

Thanks for the inputs and suggestions. Like I mentioned earlier, it's been installed twice already without any luck. This printer installation is not a standard process, and I will treat this as a bug or hiccup during the installation process (Rare instances) which may have cause the pdf printer process to skip. Possible Incompatibilities between Zeiss's Install software and continuous windows updates may have contributed to this mishap.

I will request a ticket and see what can be done for the time being.

I really appreciate your help. I usually reach out in the forum because this is the front-line for majority of solutions related to Zeiss for anyone from beginner to advance.

Hi, I definetly agree with your last sentence. However a bugfixing for the 2018 version will not happen 😉 Did you already test the last patch version from the ZEISS Portal? GEAR_PRO_2018_6.0.0416_2021.03.23_Patch.zip. Maybe this helps out?

I tried that too and was not able to resolve the issue. This is just a small inconvenient and the upgrade should get us back on track. It was something we just needed to be automatic like before. I can always recall and create the PDFs manually later.

Thanks guys,

Keep up the fight towards efficiency, clarity and accuracy or whatever gets the job done.
