Issue with Stylus System Recognition and Sensor Triggering

We are experiencing a technical issue with our RDS XXT TL3 sensor, affecting both stylus system recognition and sensor triggering. The problem arises when attempting to change stylus systems, resulting in the sensor returning the current stylus, picking up the new one, and then failing after multiple retraction and reentry attempts. The Calypso software fails to recognize the stylus system until the angle is reset to A0 B0.

Troubleshooting Steps and Findings

Initial troubleshooting included thorough cleaning of all stylus contacts and adapter plate contacts to ensure good connectivity. Despite this, the issue persisted. Further investigation revealed that the sensor fails to trigger and collect data points with any stylus system installed. Testing multiple stylus systems while rotating the "A" angle identified a dead zone within a specific range, with the following key findings:

  • Normal data point collection occurs at A0 B0.
  • Counter-clockwise rotation from A0 to A(-180) functions as expected.
  • Clockwise rotation from A0 only works up to A37.5; beyond A40 to A180, the sensor fails to trigger. Notably, when the sensor fails to trigger, it is possible to continue driving the stylus system into the sensor without any alarm or stop, posing a potential risk.

Replacement Sensor Testing

A replacement XXT sensor was provided by Zeiss, installed, and activated using the device activation software. However, the same issue persisted, indicating that the problem lies elsewhere, not with the XXT sensor itself. Further investigation is necessary to resolve this issue and ensure proper stylus system recognition and sensor triggering across all angles.

I had this happen a few times on a couple different machines with the error with stylus system change: Disk contacts not closed. I never noticed any "dead spots" like you mention. I first tried to redefine the holder location. This didn't help. Next, I tried a new adapter plate. This also didn't help. I ended up trying a new probe holder rack because we had an extra one. The problem went away. I can't explain why.
