Help request - Animation - How to display volume cut view with CAD file in videos

Hello everyone,

I've been doing videos using X-ray for some time now.

Usually we only make translation videos into the inspected volume to show our clients.

This time I wanted to display the CAD file in the video to show the dynamic CAD cut overimposed on the volume during the video.

But it seems the CAD file doesn't appear correctly.

I attach to this help request several images to explain.

Thank you for the detailed screenshots. From what I can see, the CAD model is visible in the section view within the workspace, but the CAD contour is not being included when the report page is exported as a video. The exported video appears to contain only the volume section data. Looking at the images, I would lean toward this being either a limitation of the video renderer or a defect in the export process rather than a project setup issue.

I don't understand what you are doing.  Are you prealigning a mesh and a volume at the same time to a CAD model?  I don't know how to do this.

 

That black plane on the volume cut can be removed by going to 2d sections when the volume is highlighted and deselecting shaded in 2026 or in 2021 using the dropdown to off.

 

Can you explain how you are lining up a volume and mesh at the same time to a CAD model.  We don't have a need for this, but it is interesting.

 I do this often. Especially when I do not have a proper CAD, but need to align the volume to the global axes for normal viewing during clipping. These instructions are for 2023, so it may be slightly different for 2026. 

Instructions for alignment without a traditional CAD (.stp, etc)

  • Create the solid mesh from your volume
  • Operations>Alignment>Initial Alignment>3-2-1
  • My go to is using ZZZ, YY, and X to establish a rough alignment normal to the axes. If available, use a flat plane to level in ZZZ
  • Tweak the mesh orientation/rotation in X and Y after the 3-2-1 alignment using Operations>Alignment>Single Element Transformation>Set Matrix
  • With your mesh best effort aligned normal to the global axes, go to Operations>CAD>Actual Mesh To CAD
  • Your mesh turns blue, signifying that it is now considered the reference "CAD"
  • Delete all alignments, and the mesh, leaving the CAD and volume for your part
  • Go to Operations>Alignment>Initial Alignment>Prealignment (Volume)
  • Make sure to check that the target is the CAD, Use only reliable surfaces is checked. If it won't align, use a nominal point on the CAD and an actual point on the volume
  • From the aligned volume, create the mesh again
  • Go to Operations>Alignment>Initial Alignment>Prealignment
  • Inside the part drop down should be the CAD, Aligned Volume, and Aligned Mesh

It is the same process with a traditional CAD, except there is no need for the 3-2-1 alignment and alignment tweaking. You align directly to the proper CAD.
