Purchase of new PC

Hello everyone,

I've realized that the PC I'm using for Zeiss Inspect is hampered by its specification. We produce larger parts for different customers that we weld and machine inhouse and we use hawk 2's to evaluate many of these parts.

My current PC is a Dell 7750 with a I7 10850, 32 GB RAM and a Quadro RTX 4000, the issue I've run into many times is the lack of RAM. I've talked with a colleague that has a Zeiss-laptop and he has also ran into the issue with lack of RAM during the scanning of parts, but not as frequent. And we have talked about getting laptops from Zeiss to not have to worry about compability issues, but our supplier can't do any changes to those computers as I want a swedish keyboard and more RAM than it's equipped with.

We've talked about buying laptops ourselves from Dell that is the same model as the Zeiss-model, but with the changes that I need.

We've also talked about ditchning the laptop and getting a regular computer that has even more RAM and better GPU.

But I thought that maybe some of you might have some insight to share about what route to follow. And I apologize in advance for any troubles with reading my english, it's been a while since I've written in english.

I opted for a dell precision 7780 laptop (i9, 64gb ram, NVIDIA^® RTX™ 3500 Ada Generation, 12 GB GDDR6) just in case i want to be able to use it on the go.

In hindsight i would go for a more powerful stationary system.

Martin, I've thought about upgrading my laptop but the fans have just started to sound bad and it's nearing it's planned replacement. 

Jochen, how much more powerful would you specc the stationary? I've checked on Dell and their T2 tower look like it could be specced to be too powerfull.

It all depends on

• what you do with it how many stages and how complex/large your parts are.
• what you work with: i got several offers for different configurations and the Pc for the Scanbox they proposed is significantly more powerful than for other setups.
• How clean your workflow is. Done perfectly the need for stronger hardware decreases.

I for myself hate waiting and sometimes my workflow could be a bit cleaner so i advocate for as powerful as possible with "normal" desktop hardware.

 

Something like this (from 05.2025) or more recent equivalents.

The Ada CPU are extremely expensive. I can not tell if a consumer CPU would work aswell.

I also can not tell you how good any more cores for the CPU would scale the effective power level.

I wonder - have you tryied "Polygonize large data volumes"? It should handle such situations.
