Installing Windows

Recommended Posts

The SSD on my Zeiss computer has crashed.  I need to install windows10 IoT ENt2016 LTSB High End on a new SSD.  I'm very comfortable with other versions of Windows installs.  Has anyone ever done this ?  Can anyone give me specific info on which version I need to download?

I have tested the old SSD in another computer and cannot access files.

Can you give a little more description about not being able to access files? Can you see it detected in BIOS? Does the SSD appear in Disk Management but shows RAW or Unallocated? Or it it not detectable at all?

Do you actually need LTSB 2016 specifically? I don't think Microsoft is offering any of the Win10 images officially anymore, and LTSB 2016 end of support is in a couple of months. If you just need an OS so you can get a CMM running, just throw 11 Pro on it. Our IT department did that for 3 of our shop machines and it's been fine.

Do I need specifically?  I don't know.  What do I use for a serial number?  I assume the serial number from the case is only good for the enterprise edition.  The computer is not Windows11 ready so I would probably re-load 10 Pro, but still don't know about the SN. I'm pretty sure you can still get the image.  I downloaded earlier in the year so that may not be an issue.  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I think licensing might be a problem. Assuming the OEM embedded the key in the firmware, I assume it is a key for the IoT enterprise flavor of Windows, and I think in order to get it to activate you would need to install that flavor, meaning Win10 Pro would not activate. Tom did show that Microsoft still has the Windows 10 download tool, but if that doesn't offer IoT Enterprise as an option then you might be hard-pressed to find it, as it was really meant for OEMs and system integrators and wasn't freely available to download.

But, as Abbas suggests, if you have a company IT department then your best option is to make it their problem.

Ok.  I now have Windows 11 on a new SSD but IT asked me if I wanted to have it added to the company domain.  Normally, we always keep our Zeiss machines as "stand alone" systems but I figured maybe having access to their server might allow me to keep cmm programs and results on a network.  Now, I have to have IT install Calypso and I just want to make sure everything goes smoothly.  Should the PC have a separate CMM user instead of my own log in creditials? Or, will any other users be able to login and use Calypso.  If other users are able to login, will there be unique changes made to Calypso? Are there any other suggestions or ideas that I should pass onto our IT admin?

We are using one user across all machines. On personal pc's we use mainly for emails.

Last time i told IT to lend me admin rights to install and test all what is needed for Calypso running - i was glad i demanded keeping old pc as backup just in case something is not working correctly.

But it wasn't much dificult - just set correct IP for machine connection, perhaps hosts file and edition of MSSQL service to start not delayed.
After tests i revoked admin rights.

You may want to see if you can be added to the domain with a special class of machine control computer. (This will keep you from being forcibly rebooted and make IT coordinate mandatory windows updates)

Also have them back the computer up with whatever existing system they would like. Its much easier than asking them to support Zeiss/Arconis!
