Chaning visualization units

Is there any way to switch a time or length unit in an open project via scripting? Our only solution so far is not pretty and requires a component on in the project (not just a measurement series) so we can create a User-Defined Checks and apply a pre-saved legend template that has the correct unit to then generate a report page. The second the report page is created that switches the 3D view to the right unit and we can then delete the UDC and the report page. 

 

Seems like there should be an easier and simpler way like "gom.app.unit_time = 's' "
