New Zeiss CMM Sensor 🤔

Recommended Posts

I haven’t seen it before, but it looks "simply" like a recessed VAST XXT Sensor to make more out of your machine volume.

An ingenious but somewhat lazy idea that allows Zeiss to use an XXT sensor without any technical change in a new way. It seems logical: they’ll make the most money with hardware that changes as little as possible. Could replace the regular XXT in the future.

Nice thing is that the whole gizmo serves as a protection for the XXT sensor in case of a crash.
I've heard rumors of a 'hot swappable' RDS for Prismo MASS ...

so you could switch between fixed or RDS on the fly... not just ZAS but full RDS ..

also do you have the link to this ? found it ..

Yeah I think they might release what I mentioned at the summit... kind of excited, however that looks like an odd looking RDS.

Hey Chris. Yes, the post on LinkedIn is where I saw this.

I get excited about new tech, especially when it comes to CMM sensors. It's great to see Zeiss innovating, and I look forward to learning more about this. I applaud advancement, whether that is on existing devices like the XXT or otherwise. It's healthy to experiment and take calculated risks. It's okay to fail, as often this leads to learning and iterating forward. The value-add comes from having a culture of innovation and adaptability.

My money is still on the bet that it's a "recycled" XXT.

I took the liberty of illustrating it in a short https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/074uLkx9AO-hDvdsja5F1m7Hw#XXT.

I always thought the XXT probe body took up too much valuable measuring volume on smaller machines.

I know very little about the Revo, but I've got an ex-coworker who brags about how long of a probe the articulating head can swing accurately and less probe changes needed during a program. He didn't elaborate, but he also said it does have some downfalls.

Daniel, I watched your video, and I think your assumption is accurate. Thanks.

If so, this is definitely a value-add. Updating the center of rotation for the XXT closer to the center of mass would result in more clearance, less frequent collisions and less inertia and damage when collisions do occur.

It's on the Zeiss website now on the Spectrum only at the moment. They are calling it a Compact XXT TL3
Increased measuring volume with VAST XXT compact design

Interesting. That mount is special to the spectrum though, so are they going to have a version for the big machines with the dovetail mount to fully replace the RDS with this?

Hell, if they made a DuraMax version I'd be crunching some numbers to see about retrofitting our 23 DuraMax's to it...

Such a system exists and has for several years. Angle increments are adjusted in seconds, not degrees. While it doesn't index on 2 axes like an RDS, use of this with an RT allows for infinite angle adjustment. Available in -90, 0 and +90 plate orientations.
