reference sphere

Recommended Posts

I have used 30mm spheres for XXT systems without issue, so long as the probe length is sufficient to not shank. However, I believe the normal Reference Sphere for an XXT system is a 25mm sphere, though an 8mm may be necessary as well based on the length of the probes, as Dane pointed out.

You do not want to utilize a matte sphere for any kind of tactile scanning as the repeated scanning patterns will wear the matte sphere and negatively impact its size and roundness. Here is a Matte Sphere that was being used for Tactile Calibration scans by a customer, heat mapped. 2915_ad3e1bd951bdffe19348a47fef533fd7.png

I calibrate up to 5mm styli on an 8mm reference sphere.
I also think I read in a Zeiss documentation that styli up to 1.5mm should be calibrated on an 8mm reference sphere.
In the meantime, I hardly ever use the 25mm reference sphere.
I have not noticed any significant differences when calibrating the styli on an 8mm or 25mm reference sphere, which is why the 8mm reference sphere remains my main choice.

We have 2 contours. We have Ø30 spheres that come with the devices and a Ø8 reference sphere for Ø0.5 probe calibration.

Unfortunately, one of the technicians dropped the Ø30 reference sphere and it became unusable. Therefore we will take the reference sphere

I had previously read on the forum that including Ø0.5 probes can be calibrated with a Ø25 reference sphere.

However, the ability to calibrate all probes with the Ø8 reference sphere was also new information.

Our probes are generally 40-60 mm long, so if we can calibrate all probes with the Ø8 reference sphere, I can buy a new Ø8 reference sphere.

Thanks for your valuable information

I just want to share my experience not so long ago with qualifying I think 0,5mm diameter ruby on 25mm diameter reference sphere. Sigma value was qualified very low 0,0003mm I think, but the diameter was wrong (too big). I saw that difference when 1st lowered sphere coverage and confirmed with 8mm diameter ref. sphere afterwards.
